CHANGE FOR JONAS AS SHE NOW FIGHTS NAMUS FOR WORLD TITLE

CHANGE FOR JONAS AS SHE NOW FIGHTS NAMUS FOR WORLD TITLE

‘Miss GB’ History Maker Must Beat Former World Champion To Make Her Dream A Reality

Manchester, England 11 February 2022 – Liverpool’s Natasha ‘Miss GB’ Jonas will now face Former World Champion Chris ‘El Bombon Asesino’ Namus for the Vacant WBO Female World Super-Welterweight Championship on Saturday 19th February at the OVO Arena Manchester on the blockbuster BOXXER Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook card, live and exclusive on Sky Sports Box Office.

Jonas (10-2-1, 7 KO’s) was all set to fight Ewa Piatkowska for the crown, but the Polish fighter contracted Covid and was forced to withdraw and instead ‘Miss GB’ must now face the experienced Uruguayan Namus (25-6-0, 1 NC, 8 KO’s) in her third shot at World title glory.

Namus has been a professional since 2007 and won the IBF World Female title in October 2017 in the highlight of a 32-fight career. She holds the edge over Jonas in experience with over double the amount of fights and treble the amount of rounds than her rival.

Jonas is the first ever female boxer to compete for Team GB and Britain’s first female boxer at the London 2012 Olympics.  Her ferocious style of fighting as an amateur made her a big favourite with fans and that has transferred to the pros.

With two previous world title challenges – a highly controversial draw decision against WBC and IBO champion Terri Harper in 2020 and taking fierce rival Katie Taylor the distance last year – Jonas believes it will be third time lucky and finally fulfil her dream.

Although the change of opponent has come just over a week until fight night, Jonas isn’t phased by the late change of opponent and believes she has to stick to her own game plan to get the victory.

“Nothings changed for me,” Said Jonas.  “She’s still a tall and rangy opponent and probably more attack minded than Piatkowska from what I’ve seen. They’re very similar in stature and how they box, but it’s all about me and what I do.”

She added, “It’s a disadvantage to me that she’s a natural middleweight, but it’s an advantage for me that she’s had short notice for the fight. This fight is all about me executing my game plan more than me worrying about hers.”

Jonas vs. Namus features as chief support to one of the most highly anticipated showdowns in British boxing history between bitter rivals Khan and Brook.

The undercard is lined up with some intriguing encounters including a North v South clash between Manchester’s Charlie Schofield (17-1-0, 1 KO), who makes the first defence of his English Super-Middleweight Championship against Londoner Germaine ‘G-Man’ Brown (11-0-0, 3 KO’s). Schofield claimed the belt last June with a victory over Mickey Ellison, but Brown is looking to cause an upset in Schofield’s backyard.

Manchester favourite Brad Rea (11-0-0, 4 KO’s), who was in an incredible battle with Jez Smith last October in a 2021 Fight Of The Year Contender, returns to the ring for an eight-round contest against undefeated Irish southpaw Craig McCarthy (8-0-1, 2 KO’s) in what is a real 50-50 fight.  Both will come head-on and a firefight between the pair could be on the cards.

Olympic heavyweight hero Frazer Clarke, who captained Team GB at the 2020 Olympic Games and won a Bronze medal for Great Britain, will make his highly anticipated professional debut. Burton-on-Trent’s Clarke will by-pass the traditional four-round entry and go straight into a six-rounder.

Unbeaten cruiserweight prospect Viddal Riley (4-0-0, 2 KO’s) will face the experienced and dangerous Namibian Willbeforce ‘Black Mamba’ Shihepo (25-13-0, 18 KO’s) on his BOXXER and British debut. In just his fifth fight, Riley takes a step up against Shihepo who has 38 fights under his belt with 25 wins and 18 of those have come by KO.

In September 2016 Shihepo went nine rounds with Callum Johnson, who was 16-0 at the time, until he was stopped in the ninth round. He also extended former World Champion Arthur Abraham the full twelve rounds distance in August 2013.

Brothers Adam and Hassan Azim, two of the sport’s hottest talents, kick off their year featuring on the undercard of their idol Amir Khan. They started boxing after watching Khan’s fights and, being also of Pakistani heritage, are keen to carry the torch he lit.

Lightweight Adam (2-0-0, 1 KO), who blew away Stu Greener at Wembley last November inside two rounds, will take on Seaham’s Jordan Ellison – who won the Northern Area Super-Lightweight title in his second from last fight – over six rounds.

While welterweight Hassan (1-0-0, 1 KO), who made an explosive pro-debut last November with a first round KO of Ivan Njegac on the same card as Adam, will face veteran MJ Hall from Liverpool over four rounds.

Also keeping the show in the family will be Amir Khan’s exciting and big-hitting cousin Abdul Khan (2-0-0) who has his third pro fight in a four-round featherweight contest against Liverpool’s Ricky Starkey.

Finally unbeaten Keighley super-bantamweight prospect Ibrahim Nadim (5-0-0) looks to maintain his record when he takes on Oldham’s Taka Bembere in a four round contest.

BOXXER CARDIFF FIGHT NIGHT DELIVERS RECORD IN-HOME VIEWING RECORD ON SKY SPORTS

BOXXER CARDIFF FIGHT NIGHT DELIVERS RECORD IN-HOME VIEWING RECORD ON SKY SPORTS

BOXXER’s massive Saturday Fight Night, featuring Chris Eubank Jr. v Liam Williams, Claressa Shields v Ema Kozin, Caroline Dubois and more, surpassed one million in-home viewers on Sky Sports.

Eubank Jr. defeated Williams by unanimous decision and Shields defended her World Middleweight titles against Kozin on points, whilst sensational young talent Dubois looked sparkling on her pro debut defeating Vaida Masiokaite.

Adding more drama to the night, WBO World Female Middleweight Champion Savannah Marshall got into a heated war of words at ringside with rival Shields as they now countdown towards a mega fight later this year, but Marshall first defends her title against Femke Hermans on Saturday 12th March in Newcastle, live on Sky Sports.

Viewing averaged at 585k throughout the night with a peak of 1.05m which eclipsed the previous record of Anthony Joshua v Gary Cornish in 2015 and Amir Khan v Samuel Vargas in 2018 to set a new record.

BOXXER’s Cardiff event kicked off a huge month of Boxing on Sky Sports with the mega clash between bitter rivals Amir Khan and Kell Brook on Saturday 19th February in Manchester, followed by the Undisputed World Super-Lightweight clash between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall on Saturday 26th February at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow.

Sky Sports Head of Boxing Development Adam Smith said: “Over 1 million people watched our big Sky Sports Fight Night in Cardiff – with more big fights to come this month. Our audience is growing, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come “

BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom added: “BOXXER and Sky are committed to growing the sport and making boxing accessible. We believe in the potential of the sport to grow further. We’re working hard with Sky Sports to produce Fight Nights that give huge value to our core boxing audience whilst attracting new audiences into the sport.”

‘SILENT ASSASSIN’ SAVANNAH MARSHALL TO DEFEND WORLD TITLE IN NEWCASTLE ON MARCH 12

‘SILENT ASSASSIN’ SAVANNAH MARSHALL TO DEFEND WORLD TITLE IN NEWCASTLE ON MARCH 12

British Boxing’s Queen Of The North Headlines Newcastle In Title Defence Which Sets Stage For Superfight Showdown With Shields

Newcastle, England – 2 February 2022 –   Five months on from her stunning stoppage win in front of a sold-out crowd in Newcastle, World Middleweight Champion Savannah “The Silent Assassin” Marshall (11-0, 9 KO’s) makes a triumphant return to the North East in March for a third defence of her WBO Women’s Middleweight World Championship.

Standing opposite the Hartlepool heroine will be former WBO Female Middleweight Champion and current EBU European Female Middleweight Champion Femke Hermans (12-3, 5 KO’s), who took Marshall’s bitter rival Claressa Shields the distance when she challenged her for the unified WBA, WBC, and IBF female middleweight titles in 2018.

Marshall’s battle with the Belgian brawler takes place Saturday, March 12 in Newcastle (venue to be announced) and airs live and exclusively across the UK on Sky Sports.  The full card, co-promoted by BOXXER and Wasserman Boxing, will be announced shortly.

Shields is defending her titles in Wales this coming weekend; should she be successful – and should Marshall successfully defend her title in March – the stage could be set for one of the most long-awaited showdowns in recent memory and the biggest fight in the history of women’s professional boxing.

First though Marshall must contend with Hermans. Following her stunning second-round stoppage of the previously-undefeated Lolita Muzeya in October, Marshall heads into the bout as a favourite. But Hermans has her eyes firmly on the prize: upset the defending champion and secure herself a rematch against Shields.

“After the reception I received last time I’m really excited to fight in Newcastle again. The fans were unbelievable and I couldn’t have asked for a better turnout or better support. That was a great night and I can’t wait to do it again,” said Marshall.

“Femke and I were due to fight last year, but she tested positive for covid in fight week so it was called off at the last minute. We know each other quite well – she’s studied me, I’ve studied her. She’s only ever lost to the best in the world and she’s a former world champion herself, so I’m looking at a tough night in Newcastle.”

Ben Shalom, BOXXER founder and CEO, commented, “It’s great to announce that Savannah will return to Newcastle on March 12th. She has quite rightly cemented herself at the pinnacle of women’s boxing. Headlining in Newcastle last time was a very special moment that I believe marked her arrival on the centre stage of British sport. She’s got a very tough opponent for this key defence on March 12 and I hope we’re in for another landmark performance.”

Adam Smith, Head of Boxing Development at Sky Sports, said, “Wonderful news that Savannah Marshall is back defending her WBO World Middleweight Crown in Newcastle – where she shone last time out! Sav is becoming a massive name now in her native North East and she must overcome former world champion Femke Hermans in order to keep her mega match with Claressa Shields on track!

“Savannah will also be with us in Cardiff this weekend to spy on Claressa’s WBC/WBA and IBF title clash with Ema Kozin – can both boxing stars keep their belts for a huge battle of the undisputed champions this summer?”

“We’re excited to be back in the North East for what promises to be a spectacular night of boxing in Newcastle,” said Kalle Sauerland, Head of Global Boxing at Wasserman. “Savannah Marshall vs. Femke Hermans headlines an action-packed card that will also feature incredible talent from the Wasserman Boxing and Boxxer stables in this co-promoted event live on Sky Sports. We look forward to announcing more details soon.”

THREE FIGHTS ADDED TO HUGE KHAN-BROOK FIGHT NIGHT INCLUDING NATASHA JONAS WORLD TITLE

THREE FIGHTS ADDED TO HUGE KHAN-BROOK FIGHT NIGHT INCLUDING NATASHA JONAS WORLD TITLE

Liverpool star Jonas challenges Poland’s Ewa Piatkowska for Vacant WBO Female World Super-Welterweight title.  Charlie Schofield puts the English title on the line against Germaine Brown.  Brad Rea and Craig McCarthy meet in a 50-50 showdown.

Manchester, England(January 27, 2022) – The already-packed undercard for BOXXER: Khan vs Brook solidified its heavyweight status today with the announcement of three further key fights added to the line-up for Saturday, February 19 at the AO Arena Manchester, live on Sky Box Office.

The card’s contingent of Olympians now doubles with the addition of Liverpool sensation Natasha ‘Miss GB’ Jonas, who blazed a trail for women’s boxing in 2012 when she became the first British female to box for Britain at the Olympics.

The vacant WBO Female World Super-Welterweight Championship – held until recently by Savannah Marshall’s arch-rival Claressa Shields – will be on the line when Jonas, the former WBA International Super-Featherweight Champion, faces two-time WBC Female World Super-Welterweight Champion Ewa Piatkowska.

With more than half of Jonas’ wins coming by way of stoppage and Polish phenom Piatkowska having ended a quarter of her bouts early, the judges may not be needed when the two world title contenders meet in the middle of the ring next month in Manchester.

Having made history twice – first as the first-ever female boxer to compete for Team GB and then, three years later, as Britain’s first female boxer at the 2012 Olympic Games – Jonas’ ferocious fighting style made her a firm fan favourite when she eventually crossed over to the professional ranks.

As a professional she has twice challenged for world titles, receiving a controversial draw decision against WBC and IBO champion Terri Harper in 2020 and taking bitter rival Katie Taylor the distance in 2021. Third time will be the charm when Jonas enters the ring next month.

“Before I signed with BOXXER, my management MTK and I had a meeting with Ben Shalom and told him what my goals and ambitions were and what I wanted to achieve before leaving the sport. I knew it wouldn’t be easy with so many champions tied up but Ben assured me he would make it happen and he hasn’t let me down,” said Jonas.

“I know it’s a big risk but those risky fights have brought out the best in me and I’m ready. I’m looking forward to it, it couldn’t be on a bigger show for north-west boxing and after I’ve boxed I’ll be in the crowd myself to enjoy the main event. I am over the moon and I don’t want to step up and get that world championship.”

Ben Shalom, BOXXER Founder and CEO, said “Natasha Jonas has been a pioneer for female boxing in the UK and we’re delighted that we were able to deliver this opportunity for her to add a major world title to her outstanding list of achievements on what will be the biggest British boxing card of the year.”

Adam Smith, Head of Boxing Development at Sky Sports, “It’s absolutely fabulous that Natasha Jonas, one of our leading fighters, has a golden opportunity of lifting the world title on such a huge occasion. This is once again a tough challenge for Tasha as she must get through highly-regarded former world champion Eva Piatkowska. It’s a cracking chief support fight on the massive Khan-Brook card and a wonderful chance for Tasha to make her boxing dreams finally come true.”

Following an incredible October battle with Jez Smith – a 2021 Fight Of The Year Contender and instant classic – Manchester’s Brad Rea returns to the ring for an eight-round rumble with undefeated Irish southpaw Craig McCarthy in what is a very evenly-matched fight which the night’s best man will win.

With neither Rea nor McCarthy being fans of taking a backwards step, another classic firefight could be on the cards. The hometown crowd will be behind Rea but McCarthy won’t be alone either: Manchester has one of the largest Irish populations of any city in the UK, with an estimated one-third of the citizenry drawing some form of Irish descent.

A vocal army of supporters will be in attendance when Manchester man Charlie Schofield enters the arena to make his first defence of the English Super-Middleweight Championship. Schofield won the belt with a shutout win over Mickey Ellison in June last year and is intent on a triumphant night for himself and the home fans.

Seeking to spoil the party is Germaine ‘G-Man’ Brown. He’s gone 2-0 under the BOXXER banner, with both of those fights taking place at the famed Wembley Arena in his home city of London. Now a hostile crowd and a cold welcome await him as he heads north on a mission to dethrone the Mancunian on home soil.

The massive fight card also features the professional debut of Olympic Bronze Medallist Frazer Clarke; top cruiserweight prospect Viddal Riley and two of the most exciting talents coming through the sport in brothers Adam Azim and Hassan Azim; plus Yorkshire hot prospect Ibrahim Nadim.

KING OF SCOTLAND: VACANT FOR 71 YEARS, THE SCOTTISH HEAVYWEIGHT IS ON THE LINE IN CAMPBELL VS McFARLANE

KING OF SCOTLAND: VACANT FOR 71 YEARS, THE SCOTTISH HEAVYWEIGHT IS ON THE LINE IN CAMPBELL VS McFARLANE

Glasgow rivals will battle it out for piece of boxing history on the massive Josh Taylor v Jack Catterall fight night, live on Sky Sports

Glasgow, Scotland19 January 2022 – The Scottish Heavyweight Championship was last contested in 1951. George VI was King; Ezzard Charles was World Heavyweight Champion; Nat King Cole had the hit Too Young; Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh lit up the big screen in A Streetcar Named Desire; Tottenham Hotspur were Football League Champions and the Video Tape Recorder was invented.

Now, 71 years later, the ‘Vacant’ tag will be removed from the title when Glasgow giants Nick The Glasgow WarriorCampbell (4-0-0, 4 KO’s) and Jay The Ghost McFarlane (12-5-0, 5 KO’s) collide for the Caledonian mantle on the undercard of the massive Unified World Super-Lightweight title clash between Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall on Saturday 26th February, promoted by BOXXER and Top Rank, at the OVO Hydro, Glasgow, live and exclusive on Sky Sports.

When Glasgow rivals George Stern and Hugh McDonald challenged for the title at the Recreation Ground in Alloa on 22 June 1951, Hibernian FC won the Scottish Division A title; future prime minister Gordon Brown was born and boxing legend-to-be Ken Buchanan was just six years old.

Stern came out the victor that night winning in the seventh round after McDonald was disqualified for a low blow, but Campbell and McFarlane are both promising to deliver a more conclusive ending in their fight.

Campbell, a former professional rugby player with the Glasgow Warriors and Jersey Reds, has raced to a perfect unbeaten four fights winning all by KO in just eight rounds of action. The 6ft 7in giant, is also on a mission to become the first ever Scot to win the British Heavyweight title.

“This is a massive fight card and brilliant opportunity to shine in my home city and live on Sky Sports. I’m shocked that the title hasn’t been contested for so long but it will be firmly around my waist come the end of the fight,” said Campbell.

“McFarlane’s a tough guy, but he’s just another guy standing in the way of my goal and what I want to achieve in the sport. I aim to put on a thorough professional performance and get that stoppage. The British title is my aspiration, one step at a time though, McFarlane is my first stop to get the Scottish title.”

McFarlane has experienced plenty of life’s ups and downs in his 23 years, but the larger-than-life character sees this as another step towards his dream of becoming a champion. When he was 10 he spent time in a Caribbean orphanage with his brother following a holiday where his parents were arrested for drug smuggling.

He was living in temporary accommodation when he signed his first pro contract and after just two wins he was given a slot on the undercard of Gennadiy Golovkin v Daniel Jacobs at the iconic Madison Square Garden and was then back in his ‘scatter flat’.

“Campbell can’t beat me, when my head is straight, the only person who can beat me is me. He might be 6ft 7in and a monster but everyone is the same height when they’re lying down. It doesn’t make a difference to me, I’ve the experience and power over him and this is a golden opportunity for me to get me where I want to be,” said McFarlane.

“This is the fight of my life, winning the Scottish Heavyweight title for me will be bigger than Andy Murray winning Wimbledon. I’ve had to contend with a lot in life but boxing has been my saviour and I want to make history in a sport that’s done good for me.”

BOXXER talent featuring on the card begins with BOXXER Series Super-Lightweight tournament winner Cori Gibbs (16-0-0, 3 KO’s) who saw off three former champions – Tom Farrell, Lee Appleyard and Sean Dodd – in one November night to take the grand prize.

In Glasgow, the undefeated Birmingham hot-shot will commence his new long-term promotional deal with BOXXER in an eight-round contest as he looks to capitalise on his sensational tournament victory and push on towards championship titles.

Rising female star Ebonie Jones (1-0-0) has her second pro fight against Glenrothes’ Effy Kathopouli over six rounds at super-bantamweight. Portsmouth’s Jones, a former Team GB standout amateur and British Army soldier, made her pro debut last October with a points win over Vaida Masiokaite.

Edinburgh cruiserweight ace Scott Forrest, a longtime sparring partner of former World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua, sets out on his professional journey when he makes his pro debut in a six-round contest. Born in South Africa, Forrest relocated to Forth near Lanark as a five-year-old. He competed at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he faced some of the world’s best boxers.

Top Rank talent featuring on the card sees the exciting prospect Robeisy Ramirez (8-1-0, 4 KO’s) make his UK debut when he faces tough Irishman Eric Donovan (14-1-0, 8) in a ten-round featherweight contest.

The highly skilled southpaw is a Cuban prodigy whose exceptional talent earned him gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. He holds amateur victories over current WBO World Super-Featherweight Champion Shakur Stevenson and WBA Interim World Champion Michael Conlan.

Red hot Irish welterweight prospect Paddy ‘The Real Deal’ Donovan (7-0-0, 5 KO’s) looks to maintain his unbeaten record when he features in a six-round contest. The 23-year-old southpaw from Limerick has looked sensational so far. In his last fight, he destroyed Argentina’s Jose Luis Castillo inside one round.

Making his highly anticipated pro debut in the featherweight division will be amateur star Kurt Walker from Lisburn. Walker won bronze in the 2017 European Championships, silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and gold at both the 2018 EU Championships and 2019 European Games. Walker was just one victory short of a medal in Tokyo after defeating world champion Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov.

Another sensational amateur talent making his pro debut will be the Three-Time National Elite Champion and 2018 EU Championships Bronze Medallist Kieran Molloy from Galway, Ireland, who features in a six-round super-welterweight contest to open his account. Malloy is trained by renowned coach Angel Fernandez.

Finally completing the card will be up-and-coming Coatbridge featherweight prospect Mark McKeown (5-0-0, 2 KO’s) and Glasgow super-lightweight Craig McIntyre (12-0-1, 5 KO’s).
