Saturday night promises so, so much for Caroline Dubois.
Undoubtedly one of British boxing’s brightest prospects, the likeable Londoner can take a giant stride towards establishing herself as a bona-fide world-level operator by capturing the IBO lightweight world title.
Holding the belt would propel her to the brink of mammoth showdowns with some of the biggest names in the female fighting code.
Make no mistake about it, Dubois, a huge 1/20 betting favourite this weekend, is the real deal, and HUGE nights lie in wait, but first and foremost she has to get the job done inside Bethnal Green’s iconic, and historic, York Hall.
Only then can she dream of a potential undisputed all-British dust-up with four-belt lightweight champion Katie Taylor, or even moving up to tackle super-lightweight queen Chantelle Cameron, providing she retains her belts against the Irish sensation later this year.
Her opponent this weekend, the battle-hardened Magali Rodriguez, may well be the massive 10/1 outsider, but the tough and durable Mexican has already proven that she is capable of stepping up to the big occasion.
Her controversial draw against the 2016 Olympic Gold medallist Estelle Mossely should have ended in triumph, yet despite that undoubted heartache and frustration, she has another opportunity of showcasing her talents to a worldwide audience on Saturday.
“We saw Caroline go the full 10 rounds for the first time in her career during the summer, and she was a little bit upset about that, given she is known as a devastating puncher in the female code,” bet365’s resident boxing expert Rob Tebbutt told their Sports & Betting News site.
“She will be desperate to get back to getting those stoppages and I expect her to do just that this weekend, so I will be backing her to do so via a ‘KO, TKO or Disqualification’ at 10/11.
“I think that is a very good price, but I also like the look of Caroline Dubois to win this fight in ‘Under 8.5 Rounds’, which has been BOOSTED from 11/8 to 6/4.”
Dubois v Rodriguez tops the bill of BOXXER’S latest stacked fight-card; one that will also see the hugely talented and popular Viddal Riley (1/12) bid to capture the British cruiserweight title and Nathan Quarless (7/1), whilst the bet365 Wildcard bout will see the up to now faultless Callum Simpson step up to tackle Jose De Jesus Macias.
“I’m expecting Callum Simpson to get some rounds under his belt this weekend, having barely put a foot wrong since turning professional, scoring a lot of early stoppages and looking extremely good in doing so.
“I also think Macias will show that tough, gritty Mexican style that will make him difficult to pin down. He has only been stopped once in 12 defeats and people may look at his record and think that this is going to be an easy fight for the British fighter, but I don’t expect it to be so.
“Macias almost scored a savage seventh round stoppage against an unbeaten fighter last time out and I do expect him to cause Callum Simpson some problems at York Hall.
“That said, I am expecting Simpson to win this fight, but via a ‘Decision’, which you can get at 11/10 – so slightly better than even-money.”
